At Trillium Health Partners (THP), we have the privilege of serving one of the most diverse communities in the world. Within Mississauga and West Toronto, there are over 130 different languages spoken and we know that the first step to any positive health interaction is to be able to participate in your first language. This is called Language Concordant Care. It is essential to ensuring you can participate in your care and provide informed consent about diagnosis and treatment options.
While some may historically rely on families or translation through their smartphone, we know this can come with added stress and burden. As such, we want you to know that we have a Language Services Team that can connect you to real-time interpretation services at no cost to you.
For short visits, this may be accomplished by a technology called VOYCE that provides access to a real-time interpreter through a tablet. For longer visits, we are also able to arrange interpreters to work with you and your care team.
Who Are We?
The Language Services Team is an on-site centralized service, which strives to provide high-quality, linguistic appropriate services to our patient with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and those who use American Sign Language (ASL) as well as their families.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Using an interpreter will not affect your right to privacy and confidentiality. Our medical interpreters are trained, and abide by established Professional Standards, the Code of Ethics, and confidentiality norms as other hospital staff.
How to Access Language Services
If you would like to arrange for an interpreter who speaks your language, including for American Sign Language, please inform the clinic staff before your visit and they will make the necessary arrangements.
